GRAND OPENING RESULT OF CONTRIBUTION FROM MANY INCLUDING RPCC

Kids give a strong thumbs up to long-awaited Scovill Playground

By TONY REID - H&R Staff Writer

DECATUR - All you need for a perfect Mother's Day gift is about $300,000 and a dream.

The magic ingredients finally came together in Decatur, and on Sunday afternoon, Decatur Park District board members cut a yellow ribbon to open a state-of-the-art $326,000 playground in Scovill Park.

The gleaming riot of powder-coated steel and fiberglass sprawls over more than 10,000 square feet and was besieged by kids of all ages.

The wooden playground the new one replaced was splintered and deteriorated and sat on a dirty, dusty base. The mark two version, all smooth, rounded surfaces and armed with multiple slides and everything from an interactive music station to a fossil wall, sits on a clean, rubberized surface that absorbs bumps and feels like a spongy trampoline underfoot.

For moms, it was a chance to relax on Mother's Day with the best of all rewards: safe, happy and fully occupied kids. "It's beautiful," said Becky Newton, who's just arrived as director of recreation and facilities for the park district. She spoke as her children Will, 4, and 2-year-old Drew went exploring.

"And it's accessible, so kids in wheelchairs can have access to the whole playground," added Newton, 36. "And you can see right
through it, see where your kids are."

After a thorough shake-down cruise, Will was ready with an instant evaluation: "I like the slides," he announced, but admitted there were other joys he loved even more. "Well, the swings," he said. "You can swing back and forth."

It took some back-and-forth efforts to free up a $236,000 state grant that paid for much of the project. Much of the rest came from individual and group donations, the playground having a wide appeal. "We had a car show, and all the proceeds from that went to this playground," said Rolling Prairie Corvette Car Club member Rod Finke.

The club, which drives out in pursuit of worthy causes every year, had given a check for more than $4,000. "It's something good for the kids and the community," added Finke, 63.

Don Luy, playground project coordinator and park district commissioner, said it was only fitting the new facility should open on Mother's Day. "This is a community treasure," added Luy, 52.

"It shows a lot of support, care, sacrifice and love on behalf of the Decatur community to the children of this community."
