NEW FOR DECATUR OCTOBER 2010!

Hunnert Car Pile-Up

Announce Move to Decatur, IL

for 2010

The event is moving to a venue three times the size to keep it more about the cars than the "scene", and help alleviate the traffic concerns.

The Chrome Czars Motor Club today announced that their popular traditional hot rod & custom show, the Hunnert Car Pile-Up , is moving to a new, larger venue in Decatur, Illinois.  The "Midwest's Greasiest Hot Rod Show™" has been held annually on the second Saturday of each October for the previous 8 years, and was most recently located in Morris, Illinois.  The 2010 Pile-Up has been scheduled for Saturday, October 9 at the 380+ acre Progress City facility (www.progresscity.us) in Decatur, Illinois, about 3 hours southwest of Chicago.  As many as fifteen thousand "traditional-style hot rod and custom" enthusiasts are again expected to visit the Pile-Up, and will fill Decatur area bars, restaurants, and hotels throughout the weekend.  The famed Pileup pre- and post- parties will be held at Snapper's Bar & Grill, inside an 1800s opera house in nearby downtown Clinton, Illinois.

More than a thousand 1950s and early 1960s vintage hot rods, customized cars, nostalgia dragsters, and old-school motorcycleswill flood the new venue in Decatur for this one-day event, along with live rockabilly bands, great food, and merchandise vendors.

The new Progress City location will provide both the expanded space and easier entrances and exits that the organizers were seeking for its participants.   "We're thrilled by how excited, and actively supportive, the Progress City, Decatur, and Clinton area local officials, business leaders, and law enforcement have been in working to make Decatur the Pileup's new home," stated Chrome Czar Joe "Hellfish" Wislar.  "The Pileup should be better than ever, and we'll all enjoy one heck of a party this October in central Illinois."

The unique Midwestern grassroots gathering has grown to draw international attention and almost a cult following, with hotrodders, car builders, spectators and media attending from across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and even Australia.

The Chicago-based nine-member Chrome Czars Motor Club, organizers of the Pile-Up, run the event with help from Catherine Mayotte and more than two hundred friends & volunteers, and donate a portion of show proceeds to 501(c)3 charities.  For more updates, and to determine if your pre-1965 hot rod meets the show's strict entry criteria, visit HunnertCarPileup.com.

Cruisin' Downtown

moves to

Eldorado Street

By KENNETH LOWE - H&R Staff Writer | Posted: Saturday, March 20, 2010 4:01 am

Any business owners or local car clubs wishing to participate in Cruisin' Eldo can call the Greater Decatur Chamber of Commerce, 422-2200.

DECATUR - Fans of the annual Cruisin' Downtown event can look forward to a different take on the car festival this year.
Randy Prince, president of the Greater Decatur Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the event, announced Friday that drivers, mechanics and enthusiasts of anything on four wheels with a combustion engine are invited to gather for the Cruisin' Eldo event, which will take place 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 7 in the parking lots of businesses along Eldorado Street.

Prince made the announcement at the Speed Lube on East Eldorado alongside several modified cars and the men who put them together.

"It's a citywide event, and we're hoping for lots of local participation," Prince said. "We welcome all makes and models of cars to cruise Eldorado Street and be judged for awards."
Cruisin' Downtown was an event that blocked off streets in downtown Decatur for the same type of activities. Prince said the new setup will still benefit downtown by placing the event nearby but not blocking off streets so businesses can benefit from any traffic it generates.
"We think this is a better way to do it," Prince said. "We think it's a way to bring back some nostalgia and get people out to show off their products."

Showing off his own product at the announcement was Gabe Casias. A member of The Show Stoppers Car Club in Decatur, Casias described his seriously retrofitted 1968 Camaro as a muscle car that's been gone through from head to toe.
"I built the way I liked to see it done back in my early days, with the big tires and stuff like that," he said of his design. "We're hoping to put on good shows and have lots of people come and join the fun."

Chuck Hilton, also in the club, showed off his 1930 Ford with a trailer he built himself.
"It's all about fun. We're out here to have fun and let people dream like we did when we didn't have (these cars)," Hilton said.
Cruisin' Eldo also will usher in the Chrome Czars Motor Club, which will be holding its "Hunnert Car Pile-Up" at Progress City USA at Richland Community College Oct. 9.
That event will feature a raffle for a Detroit-style Stone Soup hot rod, a unique show-quality car built by local individuals and businesses with a variety of donated parts.

C7 Corvette Will Have a Split Window

By Erin Riches | September 21, 2009

We bet you didn't see this one coming. The next Corvette, the C7, will have a split rear window as on the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray.

In an interview with Inside Line, Ed Welburn, General Motors' head of global design, father of the re-born

Camaro, told us the next Vette will follow the 2010 Camaro down the road of retro-inflected styling.

This was hinted at by the Corvette Stingray concept that was used in the second Transformers movie. "That car is not the next Corvette," says Welburn, "But the split-window is something that I expect for the next Corvette."

Welburn added, "With the back-up cameras and blind-spot detection systems that we have these days, the visibility issue is much less of a problem."

The original 1963 split-window arrangement caused sparked one of the legendary battles among Corvette factions within the company, as head of design Bill Mitchell and Corvette godfather Zora Arkus-Duntov battled over the styling gimmick's inclusion.

The feature lasted only one year. By '64 it, along with some hideous fake hood vents, was gone. The feature made such an impression though that it has become inextricably tied with Corvette ever since.

The C7 will also remain faithful to Corvette history by remaining a front-engine/rear-drive vehicle. This after lengthy testing of mid-engine cars, discussion and, predictably, arguments about the possibility of going mid-engine with the future Vette.

Assuming it does not become strictly a retro exercise, we like the idea of a split-window Corvette. If you don't like it, tell us why. --Daniel Pund, Senior Editor, Detroit
