DECATUR - The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs honored Tuesday a Decatur man wounded in the Vietnam War for his work since returning from combat.

Gordon Brenner feels lucky for surviving injuries suffered during the war and has dedicated his life to helping other veterans fortunate enough to return home.

The Department of Veterans Affairs honored him with the Veteran of the Month award for his service to the nation, dedication to helping veterans, underprivileged youth and those in need.

"It's a no-brainer for me," said an emotional Brenner during a special ceremony in his honor at American Legion Post 105 in Decatur. "I believe in God, and God spared me for a reason. I've just got a few holes punched in me. Many of my friends lost their lives."

Brenner's family, the Veterans Affairs department and other officials wanted to recognize Brenner for what he does.

"Your contributions have not gone unnoticed, and I'm sure it will not end with this award," said Pat Dawson, relaying a letter from her boss, U.S. Rep. Phil Hare, D-Rock Island.

Brenner, who served from 1966-68, said one of the biggest issues facing veterans now is dealing with post traumatic stress. Many will feel the effects from what they faced during combat the rest of their lives and need help, Brenner said.

"We're giving those people more direction," he said. "When I served, we were just happy to be back and didn't even pursue those issues when we should have. It took 20 years for me to bring it up. My era is probably the worst about getting help."

Brenner was wounded twice, with the second injury being a gunshot wound to the right thigh that forced him out of combat. He received a Purple Heart Medal for his service.                                                                                                                                 Gordon received Illinois January Veteran of the month award

from Daniel Finn at the American Legion Post 105 in Decatur.

Although many veterans have been recognized for their service, one group locally is still significantly under-recognized, Brenner said. He was one of the leaders in securing a place for a World War II Memorial in Decatur to honor 360 people who lost their lives nearly 70 years ago.

A memorial is planned in Scovill Park to the east of the Children's Museum of Illinois, and Brenner said fund raising for the effort is under way.

Brenner's work on that project was just one of the many reasons he was given the monthly award.

"He is known throughout the community," said Gwen Diehl of the Veterans Affairs department. "He is a true friend of vet
erans."

Department of Veterans Affairs Director Tammy Duckworth was scheduled to be at the ceremony but stayed in Chicago due to winter weather there.
